DuctTesters will be presenting the 2016 Building Energy Code Standards (2016 Title 24 Part 6: Energy Code Compliance) at the next BIA Bay Area Event on August 31, 2017 from 11am to 12:30pm for 1.5  AIA Continuing Educational Credits (1.5 LU/HSW). This will be held at KB Home’s office at 5000 Executive Parkway, Suite 125 in San Ramon, CA.

The educational workshop will cover a number of the updated 2016 Energy Code Standards that are currently active.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE 2016 ENERGY STANDARDS?

The 2016 Energy Code Standards are here. On January 1, 2017, all projects getting permitted on or after this date will be required to meet the 2016 Energy Code Standard.  If you live in Northern California and are not quite sure what this means, you will want to attend this free upcoming workshop for Builders, Product Manufacturers and Consultants.  The discussion covers high performance walls and attics in relation to complying with the 2016 Energy Standards. This is an event you will not want to miss!

California Advanced Homes’ Master Builder Program

California Advanced Homes' Master Builder ProgramStarting January 1, 2017 the 2016 Building Energy Efficiency Standards go into effect.  The California Advanced Homes Program (CAHP) gives builders incentives to get an early start on building advanced homes.  The California Advanced Homes’ Master Builder Program has officially announced their program is now open to builders in the Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas Company service areas! This is a program that was adopted to give early advanced design and building practice adopters recognition, one-on-one support, and incentives of up to $30,000 for both high performance attics (HPA) and high performance walls (HPW) or $20,000 for HPA alone.  This is a limited and distinctive designation with the California Advanced Homes Program (CAHP) for first come, first served builders.   The required number of new single family homes being built in your project should be 15 or more, but if you have less, it does not hurt to ask.

More New Updates as of 4/1/16:  

  • Townhomes are now modeled as Single Family:
    • A recent announcement from the CEC helped clarify a longstanding modeling quirk and program confusion. The declaration impacts how townhome projects enroll in CAHP. The longstanding rule has been that CAHP-SF is for stand-alone structures and duplexes. Triplex, fourplex or larger are considered CAHP-MF. When CAHP-SF takes on a duplex, each unit must be modeled separately. When CAHP-MF takes on triplex or larger, the modeler can choose to go unit-by-unit or whole building, and would run the model as multi-family in either case.
    • The new decree from the CEC is that townhomes should be modeled as, and count as, single family occupancy and modeled unit-by-unit regardless of how many are connected in a row. It is believed that this is the more accurate way to model townhomes, even connected ones, and will result in more accurate savings claims from the models.
    • If you have townhome projects that are being built to 2013 Title 24 Standards that were previously modeled as MF but did not qualify for CAHP, you may want to consider modeling them as SF to see if they achieve the 84 CAHP entry score for all plans in all orientations.  If so, they would be glad to work with you to get the project enrolled.  As always, they will only be able to enroll units that have not been drywalled.
  • CAHP: LADWP/SoCalGas Modifications – these changes are only applicable to projects being built in the joint SoCalGas/LADWP service territory – effective 4/1/16
    • They have reduced the Multi-family High-rise (MFHR) CAHP Qualification to 10% Above Title 24 for projects in the joint SoCalGas/LADWP service territory. MFHR projects now qualify for CAHP when achieving 10% above 2013 Title 24 building code and will earn incentives of $150 per unit at this entry level. Projects achieving 30% or more above Title 24 will continue to qualify for $400 per unit.
    • CAHP LADWP/SoCalGas will now accept partial single-family and multi-family low-rise project enrollments for projects in the joint SoCalGas/LADWP service territory

*Previous rules required that all plans, in all orientations meet minimum CAHP qualification threshold or the entire project would be rejected. With this program enhancement, any plans in a project that are 100% compliant in all orientations can be enrolled; plans that are NOT compliant in any direction will not be included for enrollment in the project. They will only be able to enroll units that have not been dry walled.

**Again these MFHR changes and partial single-family and low-rise multi-family project enrollments (2a/2b above) only apply to those projects being constructed in the joint SoCalGas/LADWP service territory.  This change applies to lots/units permitted under the 2013 Title 24 Standards.
